The Times Higher Education (THE) 2023 World University Rankings ranked 1,799 universities in over 100 countries based on 13 indicators across five categories.

Even though there were 130 more universities listed in the 2023 ranking than there were in the 2022 ranking, the University of Luxembourg improved its ranking, moving from the top 251-300 universities to the top 201-250 universities in the world.

The university also recorded an upgrade in four of the five categories used to assess performance. These include teaching, research, international outlook, and industry income. It dropped 1.2 points under the citation indicator and gained 5.2 points under the teaching indicator, compared to last year.

A research and innovation driven nation

The best performance of the university was recorded under the international outlook indicator, where it ranked fourth in the world with a nearly perfect score of 99.4. It received its second and third highest scores under the research and industry income indicators, with 39.8 and 51.2 points, respectively, marking its highest score under these indicators to date.

The university also received an A grade in several performance indicators, including research publications and external research income, in the 2022 U-Multirank European ranking of higher education institutions.

On a national level, Luxembourg encourages and funds innovative projects through a variety of R&D and innovation aid schemes that target companies from a variety of industries to increase their global competitiveness. Companies benefit from tailored support from Luxinnovation, the national innovation agency, who are available to guide them in their innovative endeavours and through their national and European funding applications. Collaborations between the private sector and research institutions are also encouraged via several R&D and innovation programmes.

2023 subject rankings

The THE ranking also ranked universities based on their expertise in a variety of subjects. Luxembourg was ranked 68th for law, and featured among the top 200 in computer science, engineering, life sciences, psychology, and arts and humanities. Its education, social sciences, and physical sciences subjects featured in the top 300, while its business and economics course were among the top 301-400. In comparison to last year, the rankings for law (92nd to 68th) and arts and humanities (from the 201-250 ranking to the 176-200 ranking) improved.

Top 25 in the Young University 2022 ranking

The University of Luxembourg, which was founded in 2003, was also included in the 2022 THE Young University Rankings, which evaluate universities that are less than 50 years. Luxembourg University was ranked 25th out of 539 universities listed.

Highly educated workforce and population

Luxembourg’s tertiary education prowess was also highlighted in the most recent Global Talent Competitiveness Index, where it was ranked 11th in the world for global knowledge skills. Luxembourg was ranked first in the world for tertiary education spending, with a perfect score of 100%. Many businesses choose Luxembourg because of its highly skilled and diverse workforce. It was ranked sixth in the world for having a highly skilled workforce with tertiary education, and 24th for having a highly skilled population over the age of 25 with a university degree.
